This album was masterminded and released by none other than Shania D(omingo), a long time friend and colleague of mine whose heart and service towards her community and the youth have always inspired me. I’m honored to be featured alongside many other talented and well-known artists such as Georgia Anne Muldrow, Stacy Epps, Defsound, Gumshoe, Linda Violeta, Roberto Gell, Joy Jones, and more. Although social networking sites’ popularity is on the rise among teenagers and young adults, Shania Domingo says she fears the relatively new form of communication is going to lead to a decline in creativity and trusting relationships among youth.
So Domingo has launched an effort to change the age of “voiceless communication” through mediums that give youth a voice — art, singing, drama and dance. With her 3-year-old organization, Lovers Inc., and area volunteers, Domingo says she hopes to build a “One Pulse” youth community center with art and music studios in the East Village Arts District.
To aid in the fund-raising effort, Domingo is asking musicians, singers and songwriters to submit their works by Sept. 20 for a “Labor of Love” compilation CD. Domingo, a 15-year veteran of the music industry, describes herself as an emcee, singer, producer, DJ, writer and community builder. Domingo’s songs incorporate elements of world music, R & B, electronica, hip-hop and soul.
Domingo and a group of musicians, artists and painters founded Lovers Inc. as a way to send positive messages through art and to inspire others. At events like the East Village’s Second Saturday Art Walk and Catalyst Community gatherings, Domingo and other volunteers have created spaces for children to create art, far removed from cellular phones and computers.
“I see the decline in creativity and social interaction, and people are more scared to talk to each other and trust each other,” Domingo said.
In the East Village in particular, Domingo said she has seen a lack of youth involvement in the arts — most events are tailored for and/or attended by adults.
The “One Pulse” center would host classes for painting, drawing, photography, dance and music. For students who wish to learn graphic design, Domingo said computers would be available along with recording equipment for musicians. She hopes the musicians who donate their songs for the compilation CD will offer to teach or volunteer at the center in the future.
“It’s up to the community to create a community space,” Domingo said. “It takes time on everyone’s part… In the future, I’d like for the older children to be able to take trips to (different countries) around the world and create art with children there, just to see how we’re all connected.”
